What makes this useful

A lot of board and batten projects stall at the same point: the battens look right only when the gaps are even, but the wall width rarely divides neatly by the spacing you had in mind.

This page works backward from your preferred gap and returns the nearest even layout that actually fits the wall. It does that calculation live on the client side, so you can nudge dimensions instantly instead of waiting for a page reload.

Assumption: vertical battens run the full wall height. If your top rail or base trim reduces that height, enter the finished batten length instead.

Tips

  • Measure after drywall texture, baseboards, and outer trim decisions are final.
  • If your exact gap feels too tight, lower the preferred gap to test a different batten count.
  • Mark centerlines with a laser or long level before adhesive or nails go in.
